چکیده

Algae and plants are the dominant primary producers on our planet and define an evolutionarily diverse group of taxa (Graham and Wilcox 2000). Despite their importance, dating algal origin is frustrated by a limited fossil record (Knoll 1992). Recent molecular phylogenetic trees place algae near the base of the eukaryotic tree of life (e.g., Baldauf et al. 2000, 2003; Nozaki et al. 2003). This suggests that endosymbiosis, the process that gave rise to algal plastids (Bhattacharya and Medlin 1995), was an ancient and fundamental force in eukaryotic evolution. A molecular timeline for the origin of photosynthetic eukaryotes.

The appearance of photosynthetic eukaryotes (algae and plants) dramatically altered the Earth's ecosystem, making possible all vertebrate life on land, including humans. Dating algal origin is, however, frustrated by a meager fossil record. We generated a plastid multi-gene phylogeny with Bayesian inference and then used maximum likelihood molecular clock methods to estimate algal divergence ti...

Dating divergence of Polystigma and other Sordariomycetes

Studies on the evolutionary history of ascomycetes in terms of time scale will help to understand historical patterns that shape their biodiversity. Until now most of dating studies of ascomycetes have focused on major events in fungal evolution but not on divergence events within smaller groups of fungi e.g. within Sordariomycetes. We used molecular dating to estimate the time of separation of...

Molecular Clock Dating using MrBayes

This paper provides an overview and a tutorial of molecular clock dating using MrBayes, which is a software for Bayesian inference of phylogeny. Two modern approaches, total-evidence dating and node dating, are demonstrated using a dataset of Hymenoptera with molecular sequences and morphological characters. The similarity and difference of the two methods are compared and discussed. Besides, a...

Dating placentalia: Morphological clocks fail to close the molecular fossil gap

Dating the origin of Placentalia has been a contentious issue for biologists and paleontologists. Although it is likely that crown-group placentals originated in the Late Cretaceous, nearly all molecular clock estimates point to a deeper Cretaceous origin. An approach with the potential to reconcile this discrepancy could be the application of a morphological clock. This would permit the direct...

Evolutionary scenarios for the origin of an Antarctic tardigrade species based on molecular clock analyses and biogeographic data

The origin of the Antarctic continental extant fauna is a highly debated topic, complicated by the paucity of organisms for which we have clear biogeographic distributions and understanding of their evolutionary timescale. To shed new light on this topic, we coupled molecular clock analyses with biogeographic studies on the heterotardigrade genus Mopsechiniscus. This taxon includes species with...
